Fakhar Abbas

Fakhar –i- Abbas is a wildlife biologist, who started his career working with World Society for the Protection of Animals against the menace of bearbaiting [1] and have worked with the organization for almost one decade.

Fakhar –i- Abbas graduated from University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi [2] and received his Doctorate from University of the Punjab [3] and completed a postdoctoral position at Wright State University. He reported the different aspects of biology, conservation and population of Gray Goral in his PhD research. So far he has completed 85 different research articles on biology of birds, reptiles and mammals

The first bear rescue centre in Pakistan named as "Kund Bear Sanctuary [4]" in 2000 was established and since then the organization has rescued 36 bears from the bearbaiting events.[5] Another mega bear rescue centre at Balkasar district Chakwal of Punjab is being established now, where his organization is planning to rescue all left bears being involved in bearbaiting.

In 2004 he started a unique research system in the country called the Bioresource Research Centre where he established the various labs of Molecular Biology[6], Microbiology, Bioacoustics[7], herpetology[8] and animal physiology, a herbarium and library[9] for the research scholars of all universities of Pakistan where they can complete their research. In 2010 he started an educational institute of natural and management sciences ]][10] where he is now trying to replicate scholars of his kind.

During his efforts for the conservation of the wildlife he visited 1845 schools [11] to involve the students in conservation of their native areas. He has also conveyed his message regarding the conservation and animal rights in Islam to more than 5000 mosques [12] in the country. The more than 80% control over bearbaiting events in the country is only because of this man alone.
